Blue Jays shut out at Fenway Park, where streaks go to die

The big, slugging Blue Jays of the past couple of weeks were nowhere to be found at Fenway Park on Wednesday night in a 3-0 loss to the Boston Red Sox.
The Jays had led the major leagues with 32 home runs over the previous fortnight and were second only to the Kansas City Royals with an .835 on-base plus slugging percentage over that span, but Boston starter Brayan Bello defied those numbers with a dominant performance.
The right-hander had the best start of his young career, throwing eight shutout innings while allowing just two hits, walking   one against nine strikeouts and, incredibly, allowing only four balls to be hit out of the infield —  one of those a pop-up by Alejandro Kirk that was caught by right-fielder Wilyer Abreu while he was face-to-face with second baseman David Hamilton.
The Jays’ home run streak, which had been the longest active in the majors, ended at 16 games.
Daulton Varsho went 0-for-4 and flied out to centre to end the game. His career-high 23-game on-base streak is done as well.
The only  Jays hits were an Addison Barger double down the left-field line in the second and a hot shot up the middle by Vladimir Guerrero Jr.  for a single in the seventh.
The offensive flame-out wasted a brilliant outing from right-hander Chris Bassitt, who failed to secure his 10th win of the season for the fourth straight start.
Bassitt had a shaky first inning, hitting a batter and giving up back-to-back two-out singles, but struck out Connor Wong to wriggle out of it having allowed only one run, then set down 15 of the next 16 hitters he faced while waiting for the offence to get going. It never did.
Burnaby, B.C.‘s Tyler O’Neill belted his 24th home run of the season off reliever Brendon Little in the eighth to give the home side some insurance.
Kenley Jansen retired the Jays in order in the ninth to notch his 25th save of the season and  445th of his career, fourth on the all-time list.
